How to Live Your New Year's Fitness Resolutions

The new year brings a fresh start, a clean slate, and a chance to redefine goals. It's the perfect time to set resolutions and commit to a better version of ourselves. The most common new year's resolution includes a fitness goal of some kind, and we're right there with you. But let's face it, we're two weeks into the New Year, and very few of us are still on track.

At Black Clover, we believe that you make you create your own success through hard work and commitment. We call this mindset "Live Lucky".

Here's how you can make your new year's resolutions more achievable and more sustainable!

1.) Set Realistic and Specific Goals

Rather than opting for vague resolutions like "get fit," focus on specific, measurable goals such as "exercise three times a week" or "reduce my mile pace by xxx." Breaking your resolutions into smaller, actionable steps makes them more achievable. A great way to start is by applying the "SMART" goal-setting framework:

  • Specific: Clearly define what you want to accomplish.

  • Measurable: Ensure you can track your progress and determine when the goal is achieved.

  • Achievable: Set a realistic goal that is within your reach.

  • Relevant: Make sure the goal aligns with your values and long-term objectives.

  • Time-Bound: Set a clear deadline to stay focused and motivated.

The University of California has a great "how-to" guide on setting "SMART" goals.

2.) Stay Consistent

Consistency is essential. Build a routine that fits your lifestyle, whether it's scheduling workouts with friends after work or using your lunch break for quick exercise. Even short bursts of activity can make a big difference. And if you miss a day or two, don't stress, just get back on track.

Having trouble getting started each day? Try focusing on small steps instead of the big picture. For example, instead of thinking about running a full mile, tell yourself to run just a quarter of a mile. Once you're moving, you'll likely feel motivated to keep going. Starting with a smaller goal makes it easier to get going, and before you know it, you'll have reached your bigger target. The key is to break things down into manageable parts and let momentum carry you forward. Small steps can lead to big progress, and sometimes, even more than you expected.

3.) Celebrate Small Wins

Recognize and reward your progress.  Finish your first week of running each day? Treat yourself to something practical, like new workout gear to keep you looking fresh. Finish your first week on your new diet? Treat yourself to a healthy treat! These small victories can help keep you motivated when progress feels slow.

4.) Stay Positive and Resilient

Your mindset is key to success. Achieving goals takes time, and there will be challenges along the way. The key is persistence. Keep moving forward, even when progress feels slow, and focus on your long-term objectives.

5.) Start the Day With Success as the Priority

Eliminate excuses by making your first task each morning contribute to your goals. Whether it's starting your day in workout clothes or preparing a healthy breakfast, setting yourself up for success from the very beginning keeps your goals within reach. A productive morning can set a positive tone for the rest of your day, making it easier to stay focused and motivated.
